How we lie to ourselves

A major obstacle to self awareness, and in turn to a flourishing life, is the tendency of one part of the mind to lie to the other.

We lie to ourselves for what might seem like a very understandable reason: we want to avoid pain.

But, we become experts at pushing disturbing thoughts far into the unconscious because we are squeamish.


The things we lie to ourselves about.

1) Things we need to change about ourselves.

2) Things that would disturb our self image.

3) Things we want yet can't have.

4) Things we are angry with others about, especially those we love


Given how risky the truth about us may feel, we have had to learn to be masters of deception. Our techniques are wide ranging and often hugely imaginative.

Distraction or addiction,

covering up a sadness

with manic cheeirness,

irritability, self or hyper

criticism, judgement,

defensiveness and

cynicism or despair.
